Ghost Tours - Haunted & Interactive Attractions - Year-Round Frights in AZ

Haunted & Interactive Attractions (Year-Round Frights in AZ)

Why wait until Halloween to get your scare on? Arizona has a thriving scene of haunted and interactive attractions that deliver thrills and chills all year long. From legendary haunted houses to eerie ghost tours and puzzle rooms that test your wits, here are the top picks for spooky and interactive fun in spring 2025 – plus an important update on a famed local haunt that’s found a new home.

Ghost Tours in Phoenix – Haunted Pub Crawl & Ghostly Histories

Phoenix may be sunny by day, but it has its share of ghost stories after dark. Spirit of Arizona Tours offers popular evening ghost tours that blend paranormal lore with city history. Two favorites:

  • Haunted Pub Ghost Tour (Phoenix)21+ only. This 3-hour walking tour takes you to some of downtown Phoenix’s most haunted historic bars and hotels. With a local historian guide, you’ll knock back a drink or two where restless spirits are said to linger. Stops often include the old Hotel San Carlos (a beautiful 1928 hotel reputed to have multiple ghostly guests), the Clarendon Hotel (site of a famous 1970s murder, with its rooftop bar now a tour highlight), and the storied George & Dragon Pub. As you enjoy the nightlife, your guide shares chilling tales of phantom bellhops, Prohibition-era murders, and unexplained happenings. It’s equal parts creepy and fun – and “spirits” are guaranteed, whether the ghostly kind show up or not!

  • Phoenix Murders & Mysteries Ghost Tour – This tour (all ages, approx. 2–3 hours) focuses on downtown’s historic murders and eerie landmarks. You’ll visit sites like the Rosson House Museum (a beautifully restored 1895 Victorian home – and yes, a few ghosts reportedly roam its halls), the Orpheum Theatre (an ornate 1920s theatre with a famous ghost called “Mattie” who loves the balcony), and even the old County Courthouse which has seen its share of Wild West justice. Guides share true crime tales and paranormal reports, sometimes even showing old photos as you stand on the very spots where the history happened. It’s a fascinating way to learn the darker side of Phoenix history, and you might finish the night convinced that at least a few spirits still wander the city’s streets.

Both tours are small-group experiences led by enthusiastic storytellers. Expect goosebumps as you hear about ghastly crimes and ghostly sightings. You’ll come away with a new appreciation for Phoenix’s past – and maybe a slight fear of flickering lights and empty hotel hallways. Remember to wear comfortable shoes (you’ll be walking through downtown), and feel free to bring ghost-hunting gadgets if you have them. Many tour-goers capture odd orbs or shadows in their photos, so keep that camera ready. These tours run year-round, so spring is a perfect time (nice weather for evening walks) to dive into Phoenix’s haunted history.

Haunted Houses & Year-Round Scares

Arizona is home to some top-rated haunted house attractions – and a few have off-season events so you don’t have to wait till October to scream your head off:

  • 13th Floor Haunted House (Phoenix): This is the big one – consistently ranked among the best haunted houses in the U.S. The 13th Floor is a massive, movie-quality haunt that delivers an intense, blood-curdling experience each Halloween season. While the main haunt runs in fall, they’ve started doing year-round special events. For example, in past years they’ve hosted a Valentine’s Day horror event (“Love Bites”) and a Halfway to Halloween haunted weekend in spring. The producers (13th Floor Entertainment Group) are masters of the craft, with Hollywood-style sets, animatronics, and an army of scare actors who will get in your face. Check their site for any spring 2025 events – if they open those ominous doors in April or May, dare to enter. Even if you visit outside the typical season, you can sometimes book behind-the-scenes lights-on tours or attend their off-season haunted mini-golf next door. One way or another, “Halloween lives here. Don’t wait till October to get your fix” is their motto, and they mean it. (Note: Recommended for teens and adults; 13th Floor is too intense for young kids.)

  • Sanctum of Horror (Mesa): An award-winning haunt on the east side, Sanctum of Horror is family-run but seriously scary. They usually open in fall, but keep an eye out – occasionally they’ve done a one-night special in spring (like Walpurgis Night in May). Their two haunted attractions, “Sanctum” (a twisted house of a madwoman) and “The Breach” (a zombie apocalypse scenario), are tight, dark, and filled with jump scares. If they’re not open in spring, put it on your calendar for October. Sanctum consistently gets great reviews for detailed sets and a passionate scare crew.

  • Year-Round Haunted Attractions: While Arizona doesn’t have a permanent classic haunted house that’s open every week, it does have plenty of real haunted sites you can visit any time (see ghost tours above or the ghost towns below). And for a different kind of scare, try an escape room with a horror theme – those are open year-round. In Phoenix, there are several escape room companies that offer chilling scenarios: for example, the “Attic” or “Witching Hour” rooms where you and friends must solve puzzles to escape a dark, cursed chamber. At Eludesions Escape Rooms, “Nora’s Nightmare” puts you inside a Victorian girl’s demon-infested dream. The Nemesis Club offers an epic horror escape called “Scarab – Curse of the Pharaoh” (more adventure than gore, but world-class set design). These escape rooms are like mini haunted houses combined with brainteasers – the perfect activity for horror buffs anytime. Just remember, the clock is ticking… or is that your heart pounding?

Ghost Towns, Haunted Hotels & Spooky Sites

Arizona’s Wild West history left us with some seriously haunted locales that you can explore on your own or via tours. If you’re up for a day trip with a side of the supernatural, check these out:

  • Jerome, AZ – “Wickedest Town in the West”: Jerome is a former mining town turned artsy tourist spot – also famous as perhaps the most haunted town in Arizona. In the early 1900s it was so wild it earned that “wickedest town” nickname, and legends say many spirits stayed behind after the mines closed. You can visit the Jerome Grand Hotel, once a hilltop hospital now a hotel, where guests report phantom footsteps and a ghostly porter roaming the halls. The hotel embraces its spooky rep; they even have a “ghost register” for visitors to log any sightings. Down in the town, the Old Corner Brothel building and the spooky sliding jail (which moved downhill due to mining explosions) are other haunted spots. Jerome offers nightly ghost tours as well, where guides share stories of saloon shootouts and ladies of the night who still whisper in vacant rooms. Even if you don’t see a ghost, Jerome’s rich history and quirky vibe (plus cool mountain air) make it a great spring getaway.

  • Hotel Monte Vista (Flagstaff): Up north in Flagstaff is the historic Hotel Monte Vista, open since 1927 and filled with stories. This hotel has hosted Hollywood stars and perhaps some ghosts. Guests have reported an old bellboy who knocks on doors and vanishes, a woman who rocks in a lobby chair, and even phantom band music from the second floor. One infamous room is said to be haunted by two prostitutes who were killed there in the 1940s – men staying in that room have felt hands over their mouths at night. Spooky! Even under the hotel, there’s intrigue: a series of hidden tunnels under downtown Flagstaff (from Prohibition days) were partly accessed through the Monte Vista’s basement. Today, you can grab a drink in the hotel’s lounge and see if anything supernatural happens. It’s a lively spot – you might be chatting with a local musician only for them to point out where they saw an apparition last week.

  • Vulture City Ghost Town: About an hour northwest of Phoenix lies Vulture City, an old gold mining ghost town near Wickenburg. By day you can tour the remaining buildings (the assay office, cabins, a tiny “jail”) and learn about its successful – and sometimes deadly – mining past. By night, paranormal groups hold ghost hunts here because so many claim it’s haunted by prospectors and townsfolk long gone. The isolation and crumbling shacks definitely give off eerie vibes as dusk falls. It’s a photographer’s dream if you like rustic ruins. And who knows – maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of Henry Wickenburg himself, the town founder, still checking on his mine.

  • Globe & Miami, AZ: In the copper mining towns of Globe–Miami, you’ll find the Old Gila County Jail in Globe, built in 1910 and closed in 1981 – said to still be haunted by former inmates. You can tour this old jail, where graffiti from long-ago prisoners adorns the walls and some visitors claim they’ve heard cell doors clanging on their own. Nearby, the Bullion Plaza Museum (in Miami, AZ) had a viral “ghost” video a few years back from a motion-sensor camera catching an unexplained figure. These small towns have big ghost tales – and they’re authentic slices of Arizona history too.

Whether you’re a paranormal true believer or just seeking an adrenaline rush, Arizona’s got you covered. Tips for thrill-seekers: Many haunted attractions offer skip-the-line or fast passes – worth it on busy nights so your nerves don’t wear out while waiting. For ghost tours and outdoor sites, bring a flashlight and wear comfy shoes. And if you do encounter something otherworldly? Be respectful – you’re in their territory, after all. Happy haunting!

2020 Season of The Queen Mary's Dark Harbor officially cancelled

2020 Halloween Season of The Queen Mary's Dark Harbor has officially been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

Dark Harbor normally runs in September, October and November at the The Queen Mary in Southern California. Dark Harbor is a terrifying haunted attraction based around the history of the haunted ship. The Queen Mary was named one of the top 10 most haunted places on Earth by Time Magazine in 2008.  Among the ghosts reportedly still haunting, are a sailor who died in the engine room, a "lady in white", and children who drowned in the pool. The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor brings the true haunted tales of The Queen Mary to life.

Epic Entertainment Group, the production company behind Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor in Long Beach, CA announced today that both Halloween attractions (Dark Harbor in Long Beach, CA and Dark Horizon in Orlando, FL) have been canceled for the 2020 season due to COVID-19.

In a statement released on Facebook the company shared the following:

"It is with heavy hearts that we can now confirm the 2020 seasons of The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor (Long Beach, CA) and Dark Horizon: Point of No Return (Orlando, FL) have officially been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in line with federal, state and local guidelines.

As always, maintaining the safety and security of our guests, actors and crew is of the utmost importance.

With the uncertainty that lies ahead in the coming months, these unfortunate decisions could not be avoided.

We look forward to the 2021 haunt season and will share more about the future when we are able.

In the meantime, please stay safe and be well."

The suspension of the ship’s hotel operation was effective May 7th. Prior to that the bars, restaurants and events on the ship had already shut down on March 16. So though sad, not really surprising that Dark Harbor Halloween Event was sunk amid coronavirus pandemic

Which is Scarier: 13th Floor VS Fear Farm

Looking for a haunted house in the Metro Phoenix Area, but not sure which to visit or which is Scarier?

Click Here for a review of Sanctum of Horror Haunted Attraction in Mesa.

This review will provide some pros and cons between The 13th Floor and Fear Farm. Click here for my past Fear Farm VS 13th Floor review.

Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group produces some of the world’s largest Halloween themed attractions, including Fear Farm and 13th Floor haunted houses in Phoenix. But which is scarier?

13th Floor Haunted House – Phoenix’s Premier Haunted Attraction

👻 Get Ready for a Terrifying Experience at 13th Floor Phoenix!

📍 Location: 2814 W. Bell Rd, Phoenix, AZ

The 13th Floor Haunted House offers two spine-chilling haunted mazes that promise heart-pounding scares, terrifying animatronics, and immersive sets. This year's themes include a Creature Feature of Classic Movie Monsters and a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Maze.

What to Expect at 13th Floor Phoenix

  • 🎃 Elaborate Haunted Mazes – Experience movie-quality sets, animatronics, and intense jump scares.

  • 🧟 Zombie Apocalypse Experience – Navigate through a post-apocalyptic nightmare filled with the undead.

  • 📸 Photo Opportunities – Capture memorable moments at themed photo booths.

  • 🎟️ Ticket Prices: $24.99 – $32.99 (Fast Pass +$10)

Pros & Cons of Visiting 13th Floor

Pros:

  • Indoor attraction – No worries about weather conditions.

  • Hollywood-style special effects & set design.

  • More intense & interactive scares compared to Fear Farm.

  • Free parking available.

Cons:

  • Metal detectors at entry may feel unnecessary.

  • Longer wait times unless you purchase a Fast Pass.

  • No carnival games or food vendors – Unlike Fear Farm, there’s little reason to stay after the haunts.

👻 Dare to enter? The 13th Floor Haunted House is waiting!

Fear Farm – Phoenix’s Ultimate Haunted Attraction

🎃 Experience the Thrills & Chills of Fear Farm

📍 Location: 2209 N. 99th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ

This year, Fear Farm brings five haunted mazes plus a classic corn maze experience for those brave enough to enter. Unlike previous years, the attraction has removed the traditional hayride in favor of The Reaping corn maze, a decision met with mixed reactions. While the hayride drew long lines, the corn maze remains relatively quiet in comparison.

Fear Farm Haunted Mazes

👻 Featured Mazes:

  • 🏚️ The Bunker – A dystopian nightmare filled with post-apocalyptic horror.

  • 🔪 Slaughterhouse – Enter at your own risk and witness pure carnage.

  • 🎃 Pumpkin Witch – Beware the sinister magic lurking within this eerie pumpkin patch.

  • ☢️ Fallout – A radioactive wasteland of terror.

  • 🦠 Plague – Escape the horrors of a virus-infested nightmare.

Ticket Prices & Fast Pass Options

🎟️ General Admission: $24.99 – $32.99 (varies by date)
Fast Pass Upgrade: +$10 (skip the lines!)

Pros & Cons of Fear Farm

Pros:

  • No need to purchase a Fast Pass – With multiple mazes, the wait times are spread out.

  • Carnival games, food vendors & a mini escape room – Plenty of entertainment before and after the haunted experience.

  • Reduced use of chainsaws in confined spaces – Enhancing the scare factor without overwhelming noise.

  • Improved strobe light placement in Slaughterhouse – No direct flashes in guests’ eyes.

  • Smoke-free environment – No smoking or vaping allowed, keeping the experience clean.

Cons:

  • Metal detectors at entry – Some guests feel it disrupts the haunted house atmosphere.

  • Additional costs for games & activities – Expect to spend extra beyond ticket prices.

  • Overcrowding with unsupervised teens – Some nights resemble a chaotic daycare rather than a haunted attraction.

  • Paid VIP parking ($5) – No real added benefit given the parking lot’s size.

  • No hayride – The biggest disappointment for many long-time visitors.

  • Dusty environment – Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for dust clouds.

  • Sparse scare actors in some areas – Some rooms and hiding spots remain vacant.

  • Lack of jump scares – Many actors act more as part of the scenery rather than creating true shock moments.

  • Uneven ground throughout the mazes – Visitors should watch their step to avoid tripping.

  • Weather-dependent event – Fear Farm has been rained out in previous years, so check the forecast before heading out.

🎃 Is Fear Farm Worth It? For those looking for a full haunted house experience with multiple mazes and extra entertainment, Fear Farm offers a solid night of Halloween fun. While some elements have been removed or altered this year, it remains one of Phoenix’s top haunted attractions.

👻 Dare to enter? Fear Farm awaits you!

Overall I love Haunted Houses, even bad ones, but if you ask me which is scarier, which is more worth the money, go to 13th Floor!

Review of the Haunted Swap Meet - September 28th, 2019

This year, The Haunted Swap Meet event was held inside Metrocenter Mall in Phoenix on Saturday September 28th, 2019.

I do not have an estimate on the number of Halloween enthusiasts that gathered to buy sell or trade props, costumes, decorations, and other Halloween related items. However, what I do know is the turnout was far larger than I think anyone expected.

The lines wrapped around the stairs and outside the mall down around the old Sears and there was standing room only inside the space rented for the event.

On one hand it is extremely satisfying to see such a turn out of Halloween lovers, gives me hope the holiday is not as dead as some might think. For the last few years, when you walk into stores in October, you see Christmas, not Halloween. When you look for halloween events, you see churches running events in hopes of increasing attendance. Even in many neighborhoods, everyone has the lights out instead of handing candy out to the folks who put effort into dressing up and celebrating. But all that digresses from the subject at hand.

The huge turn out created an issue with ability to actually browse comfortably. As mentioned, there was standing room only and the space was not large enough for the thousands of people that showed up to find a bargain.

I do have some suggestions to improve upon on this issue which was posted to the Facebook Event's Page. Now some of these will increase the cost which may mean they will need to charge a nominal entry fee (which will also assist with head count).

Some of these suggestions are a bigger location, next year maybe rent out both floors of the old Sears and seperate the merchants/businesses from the home haunters/swap meet/used stuff. This will increase browsing space and make it easier to locate deals by identifying the used merchandise that may be cheaper or have the ability to be haggled over.

Do 2 days, Saturday and Sunday. This will help with overcrowding to some extent. Now, you should still expect opening on Saturday to be large as no one would really want to wait till near close on Sunday when most of the best deals would be gone.

Maybe even do March and September. Many Haunters work on their Halloween stuff year round, also having one in March would increase the deals as many are more apt to sell items no longer being needed at an off time of year.

Spreading vendors out more will allow buyers to access each vendor from all 4 sides for better less crowded browsing. This will increase the experience for vendor and buyer.

Maybe even Sanctum of Horror Haunted Attractions (who sponsors the AZHaunters Haunted Swap Meet) can have a mini haunted house in a store the size of the one the swap meet was in this year. This would not only increase the draw for people in the East Valley, but dilute the traffic at the Swap a bit by spreading the flow out. This haunted attraction could even be up the whole month, making it worth while for Sanctum of Horror to attempt the endeavour. Get a coupon to this haunted house here.

That is my two cents, lots of neat things to see, but little opportunity to purchase because of the crowds. Additionally, some of the merchants did not have signal and so could only accept cash.

I do think, this year's Haunted Swap Meet learned and improved from 2018, but I think some of the changes (being inside instead of outside) drew a bigger crowd which created other issues. I think they will take much of the insight given this year to make next year more enjoyable. In short, do not give up on them, we need this type of thing to help keep Halloween Alive.

Sanctum of Horror Haunted Attraction Review

Finally had the opportunity to visit this Haunted Attraction. On 9/28/19 at the Haunted Swap Meet, Sanctum of Horror Haunted Attractions was offering a discounted ticket price of $13 dollars and you got a $10 shirt free. So essentially we visited this attraction for $3 each.

This Haunted House Attraction is 2 haunted mazes set up in the parking lot of the Superstition Springs Mall in Mesa, AZ.

Since 2012, Sanctum of Horror has been scaring the East Valley with incredible detail and great makeup that will surely frighten those daring enough to visit.

Discount tickets available on their website or Groupon.

Sanctum of Horror

Enter the mind of Lenore as you experience the memories of her violent past and navigate her childhood home to witness the brutal murders of her family. If you survive you can make your way through an ancient graveyard filled with the undead and arrive at St. Charlotte Asylum. Be warned the inmates have taken over the compound and the only way out is through Lenore’s cell.

The Breach

In 1953, deep within the southern Arizona desert, lies a military research facility only known to the public as Bunker 16. With the discovery of a rare leech found within the waters of the Orinoco River, Bunker 16 began PROJECT: PESTILENCE. One night in October, the base abruptly sent a distress signal. Enter the base on that horrifying night and bear witness to the destruction caused by a creature focused on its own survival.

Blackout Event (November 1st and 2nd only)

Shadowy darkness will creep over the Sanctum of Horror. Enter Parallel domain in utter darkness and find a candle for light.

My Two Cents:

My first impression was, this looks a little small. I will tell you though, there was a lot of punch. They did great with the what appeared to be a small space. I believe I heard them say Sanctum of Horror had 22 rooms (was not counting when walking through).

There was great attention to detail in each room. The scare actors interacted well with those waiting in line (they focused on those who's screams entertained the rest of us). Not overly packed and the best part of all, they only send you in with your group and they pause you at the entrance with a small prologue allowing the group ahead to get ahead. This is one of the only attractions I have been to that is not a long conga line.

Hands down, you add that part of the experience to the detail and work that is put into the attraction itself and this place (though only 2 haunted mazes) gives great value vs cost, especially when comparing apples to apples with bigger attractions like Fear Farm and Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood.

In addition, there were 2 food vendor trucks, Both selling the bottles of water for $1.50, not $4-$6 like most places. My kids said the smoothie they got from MF Koffee was the best they ever had! French Me LLC is a Gourmet French Fry Food Truck, we just got plain fries, but they were good!

Here are the operating dates and hours of operation.
