High-Octane Events to Kick Off the New Year in Arizona

Ready to start the new year with a bang? January 2024 in Arizona offers plenty of excitement, from world-famous car auctions to colorful hot-air balloon festivals under our sunny winter skies. With mild temperatures and a festive atmosphere, it’s the perfect time for Arizonans and visitors alike to get out and enjoy these local events and attractions.

Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction – A Car Lover’s Paradise

When & Where: Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2024 roars into WestWorld of Scottsdale in mid-January (typically spanning over a week in the second half of the month). This world-famous collector car auction is a high-octane event featuring hundreds of exotic, classic, and custom cars on the auction block. Gates usually open daily around 8–9 a.m. for spectators to browse the expansive auction grounds.

What to Expect: Barrett-Jackson is far more than just an auction – it’s a full-blown automotive festival. You’ll find:

  • Live Auctions: Watch dream cars and rare classics sold to the highest bidder in an electrifying arena. The energy when a coveted vintage Corvette or a souped-up Mustang hits the stage is palpable.
  • Automotive Exhibits: Stroll through tents filled with car displays, auto memorabilia, and vendor booths showcasing the latest car care products, custom mods, and restoration services. It’s like a car show and expo rolled into one.
  • Ride & Drive Experiences: Get your adrenaline pumping with thrilling ride-alongs. Past auctions have offered off-road truck courses and supercar test drives for attendees (ever wanted to drift in a Dodge Hellcat or tackle jumps in a Baja truck? Here’s your chance!).
  • Family Fun: Kids will love the interactive experiences like racing simulators and seeing famous movie cars up close (think Batmobile or Lightning McQueen replicas). Youth 12 and under often get in free with a paid adult, making it a family-friendly outing.

Insider Tip: The opening weekend of the auction typically includes “Family Day” activities and preview days. Even if you’re not bidding on a car, you can enjoy live music, grab fair-style food (giant pretzels, anyone?), and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Wear comfortable shoes – the event sprawls across a huge area of tents and display lots. And keep your phone/camera handy; you never know when a celebrity or renowned car builder might walk by in the crowd.

Arizona Balloon Classic – Dazzling Hot-Air Balloon Festival

When & Where: The Arizona Balloon Classic lights up the sky in late January. In 2024, mark your calendar for the weekend of January 26–28, 2024 at the Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, AZ (just west of Phoenix). This annual hot-air balloon festival is one of the most visually spectacular outdoor events of the winter.

What to Expect: Over three days, attendees are treated to a variety of ballooning activities and family entertainment:

  • Morning Ascensions: Arrive early (around 7–8 a.m.) to watch dozens of brightly colored hot-air balloons inflate and take to the skies at sunrise. The sight of balloons of all colors and shapes floating upward against a desert morning sky is pure magic (and a photographer’s dream!).
  • Evening Balloon Glows: On Friday and Saturday at dusk, the balloons remain tethered to the ground and ignite their burners in unison, causing them to glow like giant lanterns. Stroll among these glowing balloons as they “dance” to music – it’s an unforgettable experience and perfect for selfies.
  • Fun & Food: Beyond the balloons, enjoy live music, food truck fare ranging from BBQ to fry bread, and a Kids’ Zone with inflatables, games, and activities to keep little ones busy. There are craft vendors, merchandise booths, and even tethered balloon rides available (weather permitting) if you want a short taste of balloon flight.
  • Special Shapes: Keep an eye out for special-shaped balloons that often make appearances – you might see balloons shaped like cartoon characters, animals, or other whimsical designs that delight the crowd.

Good to Know: General admission is usually affordable (with kids under a certain age free). Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to relax on the grass during the glow or while listening to bands. Mornings can be chilly and afternoons sunny, so dress in layers. Don’t forget sunscreen for daytime and a jacket for after sunset. If you’re keen on a tethered balloon ride, arrive early to sign up as spots can be limited. And of course, bring your sense of wonder – there’s nothing like the sight of a sky full of balloons to remind you how magical a new year can be.

More Winter Fun in January

Arizona’s beautiful January weather means there’s always more to explore:

  • Holiday Lights Extended: Many of the holiday light displays from December continue into the first days of January. For example, Glendale Glitters in Historic Downtown Glendale keeps its dazzling lights on through January 1. It’s a great chance to take an evening stroll under the millions of twinkling lights if you missed it during the holidays.
  • Outdoor Adventures: Take advantage of cooler temperatures with a hike or day trip. The desert is gorgeous in winter – consider a visit to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix for blooming aloes and cooler strolls, or a drive up to Sedona to see a dusting of snow on the red rocks (often visible in early Jan).
  • Cultural Festivals: Keep an eye out for cultural events around MLK Day and the beginning of Arizona’s rodeo season. In mid-January, some communities host art walks, food festivals, or even early Chinese New Year celebrations since the Lunar New Year sometimes falls late Jan or early Feb. January is full of surprises!

Start 2024 with an adventure: Whether you’re revving up at a car auction, gazing at glowing balloons, or enjoying a night under festive lights, January in Arizona offers an exciting kickoff to the year.

Embrace the season, make some memories, and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more Arizona event updates and travel inspiration! Here’s to a fantastic year ahead.

Go-Karts, VR, & More At Octane Racing In Scottsdale AZ

Octane Raceway is considered one of the best cart-racing places in America. Their 1/3-mile track is impressive, being the only full-time go-kart track in the country that goes both inside and outside. That's not the half of it though, as the place is actually a full entertainment complex featuring a fun VR experience, all kinds of arcade and party games, food and drink service, and more.

Great for Birthdays or Corporate events, there's plenty for everyone to do. Almost all their activities are well-suited for group activities and parties, making it an excellent place for a family day trip or a full-on get together with friends or colleagues.

Entertainment Options For Everyone

  • High-Speed Kart Racing - Strap in for an intense racing experience with carts that can reach up to 45 miles per hour! The track itself is pretty exciting, starting indoors and winding around outside before leading you back in. Adult races are 14 laps while junior races are 10, which is definitely enough time racing to get your money's worth. There's no age limit to the carts, however, they do require everyone to be at least 4"8, and anyone under 18 must have their parent or guardian sign a waiver.
  • Velocity VR - Imagine a cross between a laser tag arena and a video game, and this is what you'll get. The Virtual Reality experience at Octane is totally immersive. You can walk, run, peer around corners, make plans with your group, and more while feeling just like you're inside a video game. They have three games to choose from, somewhere it's player vs player and others where you need to work together to survive. Oh, and you'll be fighting against zombies, aliens, robots, and more.
  • Full Arcade - There's also plenty of traditional video games in the arcade, featuring all classics from Big Buck Hunt to Jurassic Park. Plus, there are the play-to-win games that could send you home with a prize. A great place to hang out while waiting for your race or VR game to start.
  • Mini Bowling - A truly fun game for all ages. It's bowling on a smaller scale with ten miniature pins on a slimmed-down alley. A great experience for younger players, since the smaller size does a lot to even the odds.
  • Patio & Outdoor Games - A nice and comfortable place to relax outside. There's plenty of space to sit and even more activities like a giant Jenga game and Cornhole area.
  • The Backyard Grill - A great spot for burgers, sandwiches, tasty snacks and appetizers, and a great selection of drinks. Definitely worth eating at while you're here, especially after a few hours of racing, gaming, and everything else.

The facilities in Scottsdale are really sleek, clean, and enjoyable to be in. There's really never a dull moment between all there is to do. You can sign up for races right as you walk in, and they'll fit you into the soonest race available. While you're waiting, there's plenty of games to keep you busy, but you can also watch the races happening before you and see the results coming in on their huge TV displays. Doing a high-speed race and a virtual-reality shootout is an exhilarating way to spend the afternoon no matter who you are. Plus, they're open year-round 365 days a year.

Be sure to check out Octane Racing's website for me info.

Desert Diamond Casino West Valley to include Class III Gaming

It's been more than 12 years since the Tohono O'odham Nation purchased land in Glendale, Arizona to build it's Desert Diamond Casino West Valley.

The Tohono O'odham had purchased the property near the the Westgate Entertainment District and University of Phoenix Stadium to replace land destroyed by a federally constructed dam years earlier. The tribe then had the land legally converted into reservation land.

In 2011, the State, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Gila River Indian Community filed a federal lawsuit against Tohono O'odham in an attempt to block the West Valley Casino, arguing that the gaming compact passed by Arizona voters in 2002 capped the number of casinos allowed in the Valley.

On 12/20/15, the tribe had won it's first major court battle, that lead to the casino's opening of a Class 2 gaming facility which plays competitors against one another in poker or bingo-based slot games.

For more information follow this link.

This week Desert Diamond Casino West Valley and the Tohono O'odham Nation received the blessing of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals to expand its Glendale casino to include Class III gaming and incorporate slot machines and table games. The ruling marked the 19th decision by courts and federal agencies in favor of the project.

Class 3 gaming features games against the casino, such as blackjack, roulette and slot machines.

Visit the Desert Diamond West Valley Casino website to see current promotions.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected legal challenges by the State and two rival tribes. The Gila River tribe has three Valley casinos south of Phoenix, and the Salt River tribe has two casinos east of Scottsdale.

The Tohono O'odham tribe has three southern Arizona casinos.

The courts found that the Tohono O'odham properly acquired the unincorporated land near Glendale for the casino, and complied with terms of the gaming pact several tribes reached with the state in 2002 that regulates tribal casinos.

The court stated: "...compact negotiated at length by sophisticated parties expressly authorizes the Nation to conduct game on its 'Indian Lands.'" and "... language is unambiguous and not reasonably susceptible to plaintiffs' interpretation that the compact implicitly bars the Nation from gaming ...".

The Desert Diamond West Valley Casino will include table games, as well as slot machines. The location will eventually include a resort and spa which market research will determine number of rooms and design.

A review of The Marvel Experience in Scottsdale AZ

The Marvel Experience Review – Was It Worth the Hype?

📍 Location: Touring Event – Various Cities in 2015
🎟️ Ticket Prices: Starting at $27.50 (too expensive for what’s offered)
Total Experience Time: Estimated 90 minutes but actually took 6 hours due to long wait times

Is The Marvel Experience Worth It?

If you’re a die-hard Marvel fan, The Marvel Experience: The Hyper-Reality Tour sounds like a dream come true—a high-tech, immersive superhero adventure packed with interactive training missions, VR experiences, and 4-D attractions. However, after attending with my kids, I can confidently say that while it had exciting moments, the cost, long wait times, and lack of activities left us disappointed.

With ticket prices starting at $27.50 (plus $10 for parking), the value simply wasn’t there. The entire experience should have taken around 90 minutes, but we spent over 6 hours waiting in lines for short, underwhelming activities. While some of the interactive elements were enjoyable, this event needed better organization, shorter wait times, and more engaging content.

What’s Included in The Marvel Experience?

Marvel Superhero Origins Briefing – A multi-screen intro covering the origins of Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Black Widow.
Interactive "Training Missions" – Includes Iron Man Flight Simulation, Hulk Smash, Photon Blaster Training, Spider-Man Climbing Wall, and Black Widow Laser Maze.
3-D Dome Experience – A short, standing-room-only Marvel movie where guests spin in circles to follow the action.
4-D Ride Finale – The most immersive part of the experience, but lacked 3-D visuals, making it less impressive.
Gift ShopLimited merchandise with only posters, shirts, and hats—no Marvel action figures or comic books available.
On-Site CaféOverpriced food ($7 for a basic hot dog, $3.50 for frozen bottled water).

Major Issues & Areas That Need Improvement

🚫 Excessive Wait Times for Minimal Experience

  • Most activities were less than 2 minutes long but required 30-60 minute waits.
  • The Black Widow Agility Laser Maze had a 1-hour wait—while fun, it wasn't worth the time investment.

💰 Ticket Prices vs. Value

  • $27.50 per person (plus $10 parking) felt overpriced. This event should have been $15-$20 max with free parking.
  • The RFID tracking bracelets didn’t enhance the experience, making them feel pointless.

🎮 Low-Tech "Training" Games

  • The Hulk Smash and Iron Man Flight Simulator were essentially Xbox Kinect games, which was disappointing given the "Hyper-Reality" promise.
  • The Photon Blaster Training (laser shooting gallery) had too many players at once, making it impossible to track your score.

🎬 3-D Movie & 4-D Ride Could Have Been Better

  • The 3-D dome experience was too short and required standing.
  • The 4-D ride was entertaining, but should have used 3-D visuals to be more immersive.

🛍️ Weak Merchandise Selection

  • The gift shop lacked variety, offering mostly shirts and posters—no Marvel action figures or collectibles.
  • The 3-D printed statue souvenir was a cool concept, but there weren't enough customization options.

How The Marvel Experience Could Improve

🎟️ Lower Ticket Prices$15-$20 would be a more reasonable price for what’s offered.
Reduce Wait TimesFewer tickets per time slot or more activity stations would prevent 6-hour experiences.
🚀 More Interactive Features – Additional VR elements, motion-sensor games, and better simulators would increase engagement.
💦 Fix Overpriced Food & Drinks$3.50 for frozen bottled water is a gouge—offer affordable drinks or free water stations.
🛍️ Expand the Gift ShopInclude action figures, comics, and exclusive collectibles to appeal to Marvel fans.
🎬 Improve 3-D & 4-D Experiences – The 4-D ride should include 3-D visuals for a true hyper-reality experience.

Final Verdict – Would I Go Again?

I’m glad I attended, and my kids enjoyed parts of it, but I wouldn’t return unless they significantly improve the cost, entertainment value, and wait times.

If you’re considering going to The Marvel Experience, be prepared for long lines and limited activities. While it has potential, it needs major upgrades to be worth the price.

⭐ Overall Rating: 5/10 – Fun for Marvel fans, but overpriced and poorly executed.

  • Marvel Super Hero Island at Universal’s Islands of Adventure
