Krampusnacht and The Christmas Legend of Krampus

The Legend of Krampus and what happens if you make Santa's naughty list!

Krampus, whose name is derived from the Germanic word krampen, meaning "claw", is said to be the son of Hel in Norse mythology. The legend is part of a centuries-old Germanic Christmas traditions begin in early December of the Julian Calendar.

Hel “Hidden” is the goddess who rules over Hel, the Norse underworld where many of the dead dwell.

In Austria and across the German-speaking Alpine region, Krampus is a crucial part of the holiday season, with long horns and a goatee beard whom you might find stalking through the town, laden with bells and chains, whipping the naughty folk with bundles of sticks.

Krampus became a counterpart to Jolly old Saint Nick, who rewarded children with sweets. Krampus, in contrast, would swat the naughty children with a switch. He was grafted onto the Christian tradition of St. Nicholas, similar to figures like Zwarte Piet in the Netherlands and Knecht Ruprecht in Germany. Since the 17th century, the two have been linked in a sort of Holiday yin-yang.

According to Germanic folklore, Krampus comes to town on the eve of December 5th (Krampusnacht, or Krampus Night). According to legend, Krampus will spend the night visiting each house. He might leave bundles of sticks for the parents of bad children or he might just hit them with the sticks instead.

December 6 is Nikolaustag or Saint Nicholas Day, when German, dutch and Polish children look outside their door to see if the shoe they left out the night before contains a reward for good behavior or a switch for bad behavior.

Similar to the "Elf on a Shelf" idea, Krampus would also deliver gold-painted bundles of birch sticks to families with borderline behaved children. The families would hang the birch twigs on the wall for the rest of the year as decoration  to remind kids to to stay off the naughty list.

What about that lump of coal?

Krampus' frightening presence was suppressed for many years by the Catholic Church, partially due to Krampus resembling the Catholic image of the devil. So over time Krampusnacht has taken on some less harsh personas, including giving a lump of coal in a child's stocking rather than lashing your ill behaved child with a branch.

The “first” Thanksgiving

The idea of the “first” Thanksgiving as we know it today came from Alexander Young, who referenced an account of a three-day festival  in 1621 from a letter of Edward Winslow, a member of the Plymouth Colony.

The Thanksgiving we learn about in school and celebrate is based on this 3 day celebration of the Harvest. It was a feast with the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. The Wampanoag had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year in Plymouth, so the surviving colonists invited a group of Wampanoag to the Harvest Festival.

Seafood and other meats like deer and chicken probably were served with various meat and fruit pies and squash.

Lincoln was the first President to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday, This happened in 1863 when the date was set as last Thursday of November.

Black Friday has been a tradition since the 1930s: In 1941, Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving to be on the fourth Thursday of November, since retailers were concerned consumers would not have enough time to shop for Christmas.

Many American Thanksgiving traditions revolve around a huge meal, usually with Turkey as a centerpiece and family members Mentioning something they are thankful for.

Remember the 5th of November - Guy Fawkes day

Remember, Remember the 5th of November

The Gunpowder Treason and Plot

When the Protestant King James I took the throne on July 25, 1603, Catholics unsuccessfully petitioned him for toleration as they had been previously persecuted and subject to arbitrary laws under Queen Elizabeth I. Denied a change, 14 English Catholic men hatched a plan assassinate the king by blowing up the Houses of Parliament during the state opening of Parliament in hopes to replace him with his daughter

An anonymous letter sent to the William Parker, warned him to avoid the House of Parliament. The letter (possibly sent by Francis Tresham), was made public leading to a search of Westminster Palace on November 5th.

When the plan failed, members of the public celebrated by lighting bonfires around London. His body was subsequently quartered, and his head was placed on a spike above the London Bridge’s stone gatehouse as a warning to others.

Guy Fawkes day, sometimes called Bonfire Night is celebrated on November 5th, with the lighting of bonfires and even Guy Fawkes in effigy.

Krampus is coming to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights

Universal Studios Hollywood 2016 Halloween Horror Nights - Krampus

You better watch out, You better not cry, You better not pout, I'm telling you why: Krampus is coming to town!

Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights collaborated closely with 'Legendary Pictures' and filmmaker Michael Dougherty to bring you a terrifying Krampus encounter. This Halloween Horror Nights Maze is inspired by the 2015 film and brings a Dark Christmas themed scare.

Krampus (Released December 2015) was rated PG-13, ran 1 hour and 38 minutes and was a mix of Comedy, Fantasy and Horror. The plot revolves around a young boy's dysfunctional family over the Christmas holiday. Young Max (Emjay Anthony) becomes disillusioned and his lack of festive holiday spirit unleashes the wrath of Krampus. Christmas holiday icons take on a monstrous life and lay siege to the fractured family's home, forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

Most everyone knows the story of Santa Claus and how he brings toys to good little children on Christmas Eve. What is lesser known is what happens to the naughty children who don't make Santa's list. Who visits them on Christmas Eve? What "gifts" are brought to them?

The Krampus Halloween Horror Nights Maze at Universal Studios Hollywood takes an Old World Christmas legend based on the 2015 hit film and shows you what happens when you make the naughty list. Krampus and his nasty little helpers have come to terrorize those who lost the Christmas spirit.

It will be a lesson you will never forget, if you can survive it.

Review

Like the 2015 Dark Christmas Halloween Horror Night Scare Zone, Krampus adds a fun and interesting twist to the normally jolly holiday.

As you approach the Krampus haunted house/maze, you find yourself entering the Engel family home decorated with Christmas lights, icicles, and the foreboding effigy of Krampus standing on the rooftop. A frozen mailman walks back and forth in front of the house giving you a photo op before you enter.

The maze takes place inside a version of the Engel house and yard, with smells of pumpkin spice and pine throughout the maze adding to the effect. Fog is a common element in many of Krampus’ scenes, add that to the dark nature of some scenes and you have practically zero visibility, a frightrning effect as you anticipate what will happen next. The foreboding atmosphere can, at times, be even scarier than seeing the monster jump out.

This honestly was our favorite haunted house and we went twice. The maze does well in replicating scenes from the movie and you won't always find a scare, but the detail is wonderful. So many of Krampus’ minions are present, including the evil gingerbread horde, as well as the man eating jack-in-the-box with a have eaten woman reaching for your help.

Like The Exorcist Maze, there is heavy use of animatronics, puppets and props throughout Krampus, transforming the well know Christmas season into a twisted and corrupt versions. A definite highlight is the attic scene with the Christmas tree angel. Along with props, live actors also appear throughout the experience, though sometimes predictable, not always.

Comped Drinks to Disappear at Casinos in Las Vegas?

The easiest and most famous comp one gets in Las Vegas Casinos has always been free drinks. You play any game and the cocktail waitress will bring you one drink at a time. Casinos serve free drinks so you will stay, gamble and maybe loosen up enough to play even more.

A few big casino companies seem to be shifting gears as of October 2016. Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts (which collectively own most of the Las Vegas Strip Casinos) are experimenting with machines that indicate if you're betting enough before they serve you a comped drink.

A Caesars statement reads: “Caesars Entertainment has implemented the comp validation system statewide throughout our Nevada resorts. This system enables us to offer complimentary beverages to those gamers who choose max play at our video poker bar top units.”

Caesars has apparently installed 'comp' indicator lights on the rear of the video poker machines and guests have to wager a certain amount on each hand for the "green" light to flash. This indicates to bartenders to serve a free drink. Caesars' system is in use in Las Vegas, Laughlin, Reno and Stateline near Lake Tahoe.

MGM Resorts is also testing a similar idea with a different technology at the MGM Grand and the Mirage. These machines will print out free drink vouchers for gamblers who hit a certain amount of active play time.

I'm not convinced that this will end vegas free drinks at all slot machines, partially because most gamblers do earn their free drinks. There is also enough competition to get and retain gamblers that some places will still give free drinks. But Also the casinos would likely spend more time and money trying to deny free drinks to the low rollers who don't "deserve" them rather than continuing to give drinks to everyone.  Additionally since waitresses work on tips it would require supervising them closely to make sure they don't give out drinks to the few gamblers who haven't "earned" the comp.  The labor cost of this supervision would be more than the cost of the free booze.

Beat Escape Rooms - Tips and Tricks to Win Escape Games

Escape Room Tips and Tricks:

Both too many people and too few people can limit your ability to complete the escape game. I generally suggest 5-7 people, which means I often pay for all slots to have a private escape room for my own group.

I then bring my own combination of
  • (1 person) Project Manager (handles the people)
  • (2-3 people) Searchers (clue finders)
  • (1 person) Quarter Master (organizes objects)
  • (1-2 people) Puzzle Solvers (brain)

Escape Room Tips and Tricks
Escapology San Diego - 2016 my team at our first win

Frustration can sometimes get the better of you. Some puzzles are far simpler than you may think and if one person cannot open a lock, have another person try the combination before deciding you have the wrong answer.

Additionally, if you feel you have spent to much time on a specific puzzle, look for another. You may not have all the pieces yet, or may be chasing a Red herring. Some escape room places add more false leads than others, I have even worked some rooms where there were no false leads only the correct order of puzzles.

Below are some additional tips and tricks on how to win at Escape Rooms.
  • Start looking for locks immediately and then look for clues based on the type of lock (directional, color, number, letters).
  • Search thoroughly, in things and under things (no need to force anything).
  • Work on multiple clues at once, but communicate.
  • Shout out new locks, new clues so everyone can hear.
  • Listen to everyone, part of the reason you take different types of people is because people's experiences lead them to think differently.
  • Do not be afraid to ask the Game Master to warn if you are falling behind the average group 15, 30 and 45 minute marks.
  • Do not be afraid to ask for clues if you are behind the average group at some point, you will still feel better winning with a clue than not winning at all (I promise).

Here are a few places I have enjoyed:
Escape Rooms Mesa
The Room Escape Games - Avondale, AZ
Baffled Escape Rooms - Peoria Arizona
Official SAW Escape Room in Las Vegas

If you have an escape room in Arizona, Nevada or California, you would like my team to try and then review, please contact me on Facebook.

Friday and the number 13

When and how Friday and the number 13 became linked is uncertain, though  Fridays and the number 13 seperatly have their own history and myths, there does not seem to be mention of a Friday the 13th before the 19th century.

One of the most pervasive myths is that if 13 people share a meal together, one will soon die. This can be attributed to the Christian Last Supper and a popular Norse myth,

The Thirteen Club (formed by William Fowler) met on September 13th, 1881 and actively mocked many established ‘superstitions’. The group of 13 would meet on the 13th of each month and sit 13 to a table and break of mirrors, spill salt, and walk under ladders, among other activities.

Friday the the number 13 were further linked by Hollywood in 1980 the release of the movie Friday the 13th, where Jason slashes his way across a summer camp for revenge.

Whether there is merit to the myths and superstitions surrounding Friday the 13th will remain a mystery with anecdotal evidence.

It seems as if the unexplained fears surrounding the number 13 are a Western construct. Some cultures, including the Ancient Egyptians, actually considered the number lucky. More than 80% of the office buildings and hotels in the United States do not have a 13th floor, The vast majority of hotels, hospitals and airports also avoid using the number to designate rooms and gates.

Desert Diamond Casino West Valley to include Class III Gaming

It's been more than 12 years since the Tohono O'odham Nation purchased land in Glendale, Arizona to build it's Desert Diamond Casino West Valley.

The Tohono O'odham had purchased the property near the the Westgate Entertainment District and University of Phoenix Stadium to replace land destroyed by a federally constructed dam years earlier. The tribe then had the land legally converted into reservation land.

In 2011, the State, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Gila River Indian Community filed a federal lawsuit against Tohono O'odham in an attempt to block the West Valley Casino, arguing that the gaming compact passed by Arizona voters in 2002 capped the number of casinos allowed in the Valley.

On 12/20/15, the tribe had won it's first major court battle, that lead to the casino's opening of a Class 2 gaming facility which plays competitors against one another in poker or bingo-based slot games.

For more information follow this link.

This week Desert Diamond Casino West Valley and the Tohono O'odham Nation received the blessing of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals to expand its Glendale casino to include Class III gaming and incorporate slot machines and table games. The ruling marked the 19th decision by courts and federal agencies in favor of the project.

Class 3 gaming features games against the casino, such as blackjack, roulette and slot machines.

Visit the Desert Diamond West Valley Casino website to see current promotions.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected legal challenges by the State and two rival tribes. The Gila River tribe has three Valley casinos south of Phoenix, and the Salt River tribe has two casinos east of Scottsdale.

The Tohono O'odham tribe has three southern Arizona casinos.

The courts found that the Tohono O'odham properly acquired the unincorporated land near Glendale for the casino, and complied with terms of the gaming pact several tribes reached with the state in 2002 that regulates tribal casinos.

The court stated: "...compact negotiated at length by sophisticated parties expressly authorizes the Nation to conduct game on its 'Indian Lands.'" and "... language is unambiguous and not reasonably susceptible to plaintiffs' interpretation that the compact implicitly bars the Nation from gaming ...".

The Desert Diamond West Valley Casino will include table games, as well as slot machines. The location will eventually include a resort and spa which market research will determine number of rooms and design.
